Factors influencing stigma among healthcare professionals towards people who use illicit drugs in Japan: A quantitative study

Abstract Aim Stigma among healthcare professionals toward people who use drugs (PWUDs) must be addressed for recovery. However, research on this topic is limited in Japan, therefore we developed a brand‐new scale through coproduction with PWUDs to measure stigma and conducted survey using the examine what influences towards Japanese settings. Methods Based interviews their families, containing 24 questions PWUDs. The was sent working public sector. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) confirmatory (CFA) were determine construct. Generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) analyses each of set as dependent variable discover specific contribution professionals' stigma. Results six factors suggested by EFA showed good fit, confirmed CFA questions. GLMM discovered that “currently providing treatment services PWUDs,” “having close themselves,” “experiencing violence client when services” significantly associated higher scores. “Experience receiving support,” “attending self‐help groups,” “using peer‐based recovery support PWUDs” lower Conclusion coproduced local can reliable tool face Japan. Further results indicate interaction recovered should promoted.
